Back to school season is exciting for some kids, but stressful for others and their families.
With your help, Katie & Ed’s Snack Project is supporting four firefighter charitable initiatives throughout the Lower Mainland; Vancouver, Delta, Surrey and Langley.
Katie & Ed’s Snack Project aims to help provide healthy snacks to over 35,000 school kids facing food insecurity at home. Let’s make sure that kids head to school knowing delicious and nutritious snacks are available. Full bellies means happier kids… socially, mentally and physically!!

The Delta Fire Fighters Healthy Snack Program was launched in March 2021 and is part of our Charitable Societies commitment to support those in need within our community.
This initiative was initially funded by Delta’s firefighters via payroll deductions and generous community donors, recognizes the crucial role that nutrition plays in the development and learning of children and youth.
Our program delivers snacks every month and includes many options for breakfast, snack break and lunch. This program is run on a volunteer basis and program costs are kept to a minimum. Off-duty Delta Firefighters volunteer their time to purchase, organize and deliver snacks to the schools in Delta, reaching almost 1500 empty stomachs, every day.
Our goal is to eliminate the stigma behind needing and asking for help. There is absolutely no charge to the schools or to the students for this food.
The Surrey Fire Fighters Nutritional Snack Program was developed in 1997 due to the concern about the level of hunger among the City of Surrey’s most disadvantaged children. Our mission is to combat student hunger and foster academic success by providing nutritious meals to students in BC School District #36 (Surrey). We believe that every child deserves the chance to thrive in their educational journey, and we are committed to ensuring no student goes hungry, promoting both health and learning through access to wholesome food. This school year we reached over 7500 students in 130 schools in Surrey.
The program costs are kept to a minimum and the only expense is for the food itself. The Surrey Fire Department provides transportation and the labour is provided by firefighters and school administrators both of which keep this program running in an efficient manner. Volunteer firefighters (past and present) pick up the food from the grocery store and deliver it to the participating schools. School administrators hand out the food to those that are in need.
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO CHARGE TO THE SCHOOLS OR TO THE STUDENTS FOR THE FOOD.
This program is unique. The Langley School District #35 is spread over two municipal areas, the Township of Langley, and Langley City. To ensure no student was left vulnerable, the Township of Langley Firefighters (L4550), and Langley City Firefighters (L3253) have partnered together to establish a dynamic Healthy School Snack Program!
The Langley School Healthy Snack Program, run by the Township of Langley Firefighters Charitable Society and Langley City Firefighters, provides nutritious snacks to students in 32 schools in the Township of Langley and 7 schools in Langley City. Serving approximately 23,000 students, the program promotes healthy eating, supports academic success, and addresses food insecurity. Funded through donations and community support, it ensures all students have access to healthy snacks, fostering better health and well-being.
Vancouver Firefighters believe that no child should go hungry in a Vancouver school. With this in mind the Vancouver Firefighter Charities (VFC) has partnered with the Vancouver School Board (VSB) to create the Snacks For Kids program which provides food to kids and families that need our help.
Currently the Snacks For Kids program provides nutritional support to 6000 food insecure youth in over 65 Vancouver schools and after school programs. Snacks For Kids focuses on providing nutrient-dense food that fuels kids for learning. We accomplish this through a cost-effective approach where we buy in bulk from wholesalers and keep overhead low by leveraging a capable and motivated group of Off-Duty Vancouver Firefighters.
Children are able to access this food through a discreet distribution system, which allows the child to participate anonymously ensuring any social stigmatization is minimized. Food support goes to only those children that are not having their nutritional needs met at home.
